Best Managment Practices Dust Control Methods & Products

Asphalt Pavement

Asphalt pavement is the most common way to improve dirt and gravel roads and is very expensive.

Pros: Solves the problem of dust and mud

Cons: Drainage needs to be improved along the roadway, increases the cost and significantly takes up most of public works resources, lasts 5-10 years

Calcium Chloride

Calcium Chloride is an industrial salt that draws moisture from the air wetting the surrounding dust particles, preventing them from becoming airborne.

Pros: Inexpensive, easy to apply

Cons: Very toxic and corrosive to soil, air, and water, only lasts for several weeks in dry climates, may need to be reapplied several times per year, dried material may become airborne and toxic to inhale, protective equipment required for use, changes pH of soil, may cause harm to plants/animals, rain may liquify the product and turn into runoff polluting rivers, lakes, streams, and wetlands

Magnesium Chloride

Magnesium Chloride is an industrial salt that draws moisture from the air wetting the surrounding dust particles, preventing them from becoming airborne.

Pros: Inexpensive, easy to apply

Cons: Very toxic and corrosive to soil, air, and water, only lasts for several weeks in dry climates, may need to be reapplied several times per year, dried material may become airborne and toxic to inhale, protective equipment required for use, changes pH of soil, may cause harm to plants/animals, rain may liquify the product and turn into runoff polluting rivers, lakes, streams, and wetlands.

Lignin Sulfonate

Lignin Sulfonate is a byproduct of paper pulp manufacturing.

Pros: Inexpensive, easy to apply

Cons: May need to be reapplied annually, protective equipment necessary, do not inhale vapors, dry airborne material may irritate the respiratory system, thermal decomposition may release toxic oxides of carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen, may change pH of soil, unhealthy for plants/animals, rain may liquify the product and turn into runoff polluting rivers, lakes, streams, and wetlands.

Watering

Pros: Inexpensive, easy to apply

Cons: Must be applied multiple times per day, uses a valuable natural resource, may create slippery driving surfaces, creates track out onto paved  surfaces causing airborne dust and the need for street sweeping, application equipment and sweeping produce CO2, freezes in cold weather

The Dust Pros product: HevyRayn

Pros: HevyRayn is guaranteed to last a minimum of 2 years ( expected to last up to 5 years at 100% effectiveness) with one application, easy to apply, nontoxic, non-corrosive, safe for humans/animals, does not pollute wetlands, military-grade dust control, does not freeze

Cons:  Not recommended for unpaved driving surfaces with more than 5% clay, gypsum, or calcareous material. These materials will increase the application rate and cost beyond the minimum needed to be effective due to the high absorption. Like a sponge soaking up water clay, gypsum and calcareous materials soak up the product requiring a heavier application than without these materials present. The dust can be controlled using HevyRayn on these materials but as much as 25% or more product may be needed than driving surfaces without these materials. Sandy gravel and stone dust surfaces are best suited for this product to be used at its minimum application rate.
